The core principle of Sonic Moves is to connect sound parameters to body tracking. This means that you can change almost all of them in real-time. Musical parameters of software instruments like note onsets, velocity, octave and transposition can also be made interactive.

Live Testing

You can also test your composition interactively through various methods:

  • Using the cameras of your iPad
  • Loading prerecorded videos (iPad only)
  • Using built-in body-tracking example data
  • Streaming body tracking data from an iPhone or iPad with Sonic Moves Player
  • Sending quick exports to a device via Airdrop and play them in Sonic Moves Player

Publishing

Sonic Moves compositions are meant to be played in the Sonic Moves Player app. Export your piece as a single file which you own and can distribute. This gives you complete control over your work. You can upload it to a website or file hoster, share it for free, or sell it through platforms like Gumroad. We are not involved in the distribution process of your works.

Why Sonic Moves is a Platform

Case Study: The Making of the Sonic Moves Trailer

For our trailer, Jakob composed the piece “White Mountain” on his iPad in Sonic Moves Creator. He used synths, samplers, pre-recorded loops, drum machines and a number of effects. For the interactive part, he focused on the hands.

In Berlin, we met with performer Tomoko Nakasato, and videographer Clemens Jurk. We put an iPad on a stand and used Sonic Moves Creator for live body tracking and sound output. For the live sound we had a bluetooth speaker connected. At the same time, we captured audio and video from the iPad to use it in the trailer later.

Just listening to the interactive sound, Tomoko completely improvised her movements which you can see in the video.

Ultimately, we were happy and pleased with how well the process went and how smooth the workflow was.
